Plastics are increasingly found in museum collections, for example in ethnographical and textile collections. They were used to imitate precious materials like ivory and amber. However since the 1960th , plastics are also to be found in modern art collections and design collections, collections of household goods and in collections of scientific equipment.

Masterclass Dry Cleaning methods

The ICN just completed a 3-year study of dry cleaning methods applied on unvarnished modern paintings. Materials´ properties, cleaning efficiency and (short and long term) side effects were investigated for c. 25 dry cleaning materials such as Groom stick, PVC erasers, smoke sponge or Akapad (formerly known as Wishab). The ICN organises this masterclass to share its approach, results and conclusions and keep moving forward with this project.

Picture Meetings are professional but informal meetings organised by ICN every three months since 2006. Participants are conservators and conservation scientists from the Netherlands and abroad. Every meeting has a theme. Participants are invited to present their research and questions befitting the theme. .

This masterclass is organized by the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage and focuses on the practice and discussion of a risk based decision making model for climate control. The steps include valuation of collection and building, analysis of the possibilities the building offers, collection needs and control over the indoor climate. From valuation to the development and planning of options for climate risk mitigation.Participants practise each stage of this approach by working, discussing and studying in a real historic house with its collection. The course emphasizes on communication and teamwork.
