This study investigates the surface cleaning of an unvarnished painting using citrate solutions at a range of pH.

Cleaning problems of matte and water-soluble paints in a triptych (Untitled, 1964-65) by Jasper Johns

Klaas Jan van den Berg, Aviva Burnstock, Emilie Froment, Suzan de Groot, Peter Hallebeek, Henk van Keulen, Louise Wijnberg

Dirt removal from painted surfaces is commonly undertaken using water and water-soluble additives such as surfactants and citrates. Water sensitivity, or solubility, of oil paints used for unvarnished paintings from the 1960s and 70s pose difficult problems for surface cleaning. This problem is analysed in the context of a technical study of a painting by Jasper Johns from 1964-65, in which all paints used exhibited a characteristic sensitivity to water.
